Privacy
The short version. The plans you build stay in your browser. There is no account, no bank linking, and nothing you type is sent to our servers unless you later choose a feature that would. What is collected is ordinary web traffic data: which pages get opened, on what kind of device, and roughly where in the world the request came from. No dollar amounts, no account balances, no birth dates, no plan names.
Your plan data
Everything you enter into the forecaster is stored in your own browser, on your own device, using the browser's built-in local storage. It is not sent to our servers. There is no copy on a server, which means there is nothing for us to look at, nothing to leak in a breach, and nothing to hand over if someone asked.
Two things are stored by your browser:
- Your plans. Household details, account balances, income, expenses, liabilities, and assumptions.
- Preferences for this browser. Your color theme, which demo plans you have hidden, and which plan and tab you had open last.
Forecast Your Money never asks for bank credentials and cannot connect to your financial accounts. There is no account aggregation, and no integration with any institution.
The flip side of local storage. Because your plans live only in this browser, clearing your browsing data, switching browsers, or moving to another device means they will not be there. There is no copy on our side to restore. Settings has a Download that writes a file of your plans onto your device, and an Upload that reads one back. Keep that file if you would like a backup of the numbers.
Share links
A plan has a share button, which gives you a link you can send to someone. That link does not point at a copy on our server, because there is no copy on our server. The plan itself is packed into the part of the link after the #, which browsers keep to themselves: it is not sent to the web host, so it is not in our page counting or our request log. The plan is unpacked in the browser of whoever opens it.
Copying a link is you choosing to send your numbers to someone, and to whatever carries them: an inbox, a group chat, a forum thread. Names are left out of it, but balances, income, expenses, state of residence, and birth month and year are all in there, and a link cannot be switched off once it is sent. There is more detail on what is in a share link.
What is and is not collected
The site counts page views, using Cloudflare Web Analytics, to understand which pages people read and whether they load quickly. For example, we might want to know how many people open the Outcomes tab compared to the Projections tab, or what share of visitors are on a phone even though this is a better experience on a laptop. An answer to that second one might persuade us to put real effort into the mobile version, or to leave it as it is.
That page counting does not use cookies or store anything in your browser. There is no account, no visitor ID, and no fingerprinting, so there is nothing in it that follows you between visits or between sites.
The web host also keeps an ordinary request log, the way essentially every website does: which address was asked for, when, the kind of browser, the IP address it came from, and the city that comes with it. That is the server's own record of answering a request. It is automatically deleted after 30 days, read as counts, not joined to anything else.
Nothing you type into a plan is sent to our servers, by either route. The page counting trims the address before it leaves your browser, removing everything after a ? or a #, and the part after the # is never sent to any server by any browser, which is what keeps the contents of a share link out of all of this.
If you write to the feedback address, that email sits in an inbox like any other. It is used to reply to you and to fix what you reported. It is not added to a mailing list.
If a feature ever sent plan data
Signing in, syncing across devices, or any other feature that would send a copy of a plan is something people might ask for, and it may be built. If it is, three things will hold: it will be opt-in, it will ask for your consent separately and specifically, and using Forecast Your Money without an account, with everything staying on your own device, will remain fully supported. This page will be updated if that ever ships.
Your controls
- To delete your plans: clear this site's data in your browser settings. That removes everything, immediately and permanently.
- To avoid the page counting: use a browser or extension that blocks it. Everything keeps working. That blocks the counting, not the request log, which is a record of requests your browser has to make either way.
- To use this without an account: do nothing. There is no sign-up and no email, so nothing you build here is tied to a name.
